How do meiosis and ual reproduction (fertilization) produce offspring that differ genetically from the pare?

Prior to the paired chromosomes separating, logous pairs undergo what is known as crossing over. In this process random segments between the two chromosomes are exchanged. This is the reason everyone is not the same, and the reason that brothers and sisters are not identical genetically.
