After the election of 2004, evangelical 'Values Voters' thought they were riding high. What happened?

Actually, they found out during Bush's second term that they didn't really care about them - they just sucked up to them to get their votes. The evangelicals are still a powerful voting bloc but just not as powerful as they once were. Also, I have my suspicions that the country was in favor of having a "Christian" president in fear of the end of the world due to the onset of the Millennium - no matter how irrational that may have been.
