When a person finds out that someone they trusted for a long time has betrayed them . . .?

Should they spend time yzing what character weaknesses of their own caused them to be vulnerable in this way, or is this a waste of time? How long generally does it take before they see the betrayer reap the "rewards" of the betrayal?
