Fireplace codes for apartments in WA.?

I moved into an apartment in Lakewood, WA and i noticed that my fireplace is just a sheet metal shell. I was wondering if building codes make it mandatory to be lined with a ceramic fire brick or something else. I already asked the maintenance supervisor for my building and he has no idea. Any help would be appreciated.
